Galesburg Museum

Several residents of the Galesburg community wanted to preserve the history of the town through the establishment of a museum. The Galesburg Historical Society was established in the 90's. One of the remaining original buildings was secured and work was begun to make it usable. It was the site of the Wolmedorff Restaurant and had been abandoned for more than 50 years. A new roof was installed on the south side to reduce further deterioration and the floor was leveled. Funding was an issue and the project came to a halt. When a new post office was opened in 2002, the old post office was donated to the Historical Society for use as a museum by Everett and Lois Shrum. The building was originally the Galesburg State Bank chartered in 1904 and still has the original vault in place.

Volunteers began the work of remodeling and painting the building in February 2003. Many items of local interest including many of the Shaw Manufacturing Plant advertisements and memorabilia were donated or loaned for display. The museum officially opened for alumni for their May annual meeting. Many of the exhibitors at the Shaw Celebration 2003 toured the museum.

One of the unique items on display is a railroad inspector's car which features a Shaw engine donated by Glen Wiglesworth of Kansas City..

The museum is open by appointment by contacting one of the members listed on the door or by e-mailing shawcycle@yahoo.com.

Further plans include securing another building to house some of the Shaw equipment from collectors in the area. The old restaurant building is still being considered for restoration thanks to the generous donation of a Galesburg resident.

We are always looking for interesting items to display. Contact John Hasty at shawcycle@yahoo.com or by calling (620) 763-2357
